Synergetic Use: Green Roof in Combination with Photovoltaic System for Day Care Centre

The planning of day care centres and educational institutions presents complex challenges for planners and architects. In addition to the design of play areas and the facade, the roof of the building is also becoming increasingly important. Economic efficiency and durability as a basic requirement can hardly be separated from sustainable solutions such as photovoltaic elements or green roofs.

The new day care centre in Bad Ditzenbach, which offers space for six groups of children under and over the age of three, also uses a combination of green roof and a photovoltaic system. The basis is formed by around 500m² of BEMO standing seam. In the following, we explain what the benefits are.

Day Care Centre with a green roof: A Basic Structure – Double Sustainability

Cost-effectiveness and durability are prerequisites that are given in almost every educational building. In combination with the desire to implement both a green roof and photovoltaic elements, a standing seam Aluminum roof forms the ideal base construction.

BEMO Aluminum standing seam roofs are installed without penetration and are therefore particularly weather-resistant. Standing seam profiles with a seam height of 65mm were used for the children’s home in Bad Ditzenbach – these are particularly suitable for flat sloping roofs and convince with their very good load-bearing capacity and therefore good static values. When it comes to design diversity, there are almost no limits to BEMO standing seam roofs – whether in chic anthracite gray (RAL 7016) or bright colours. A green roof or photovoltaic system can be applied directly to the standing seam roof – the base construction is the same

Photovoltaics for a Sustainable Roof

Photovoltaic elements are attached to the standing seam using special BEMO-TOP and BEMO-AKKORD rails that have been tried and tested over many years. As a result, the roof is protected in the long term and is sealed for life. Furthermore, there is the great advantage against individual clamps: there are no point loads and no constraint. The height of the standing seam flange together with the height of the BEMO rails also ensure trouble-free rear ventilation of the modules.

Green Roofs as a Further Sustainable Component

For the BEMO-VERT green house roofing, the system build-up sedum carpet is applied directly to the standing seam roof – without any further sealing measures. Shear protection also enables greening of sloping or curved roof shapes of up to 10°. Well-designed drainage facilities as well as connections and terminations are made to suit the property. The aluminum surface of the profiles offers permanent protection against root penetration, the constructive type of attachment reliably prevents the ingress of water or moisture.

The combination of BEMO-VERT and BEMO-SOLAR pays off: Green roofs reduce the ambient temperature and thus increase the performance of photovoltaic elements. So in the end, twice as sustainable!
